Ammori Discusses Copyright and Antitrust At George Mason

On May 15, Ammori participated in GMU’s Law and Economic Center’s Third Annual Conference on Competition Policy in Search and Social Media. Ammori spoke on a panel addressing the intersection of copyright and antitrust. Also on the panel were FTC Attorney Barbara Blank, University of Pennsylvania Professor Eric Clemons, and Vice President of Legal Affairs at Public Knowledge Sherwin Siy. George Mason Law Professor Adam Mossoff moderated the discussion. Ammori’s remarks analyzed the outcome of the FTC’s antitrust investigation of Google and explained why Google’s alleged “scraping” is actually permissible under copyright law, and don’t form the basis of an antitrust claim.

Ammori Talks With App Developers

On May 13, Ammori addressed the 2013 Class of the National Association of REALTORS’s REach Accelerator Program.
Like any other industry, realtors are using technology to improve their entire business, whether through cloud storage or online video chat services. The REach accelerator works with startups developing these types of products for the real estate community. Ammori spoke with representatives of the companies in this year’s accelerator program, discussing the importance of public policy, including privacy and intellectual property, and how those issues affect their businesses. Ammori also discussed why these startups should be paying attention to what’s going on in Washington, and how Engine Advocacy helps startups do precisely that.

Pelican Joins Panel To Discuss DNS

On April 19th, Pelican spoke on a panel for a conference sponsored by Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy entitled, “Reinventing the Internet’s Phone Book? Institutions, Industry, Infrastructure.”

Pelican, along with Steve Crocker (Chair, ICANN Board), Matthew Schruers (Vice President for Law & Policy, CCIA), and Scott McCormick (Consultant, McCormick ICT International) discussed the use of the Domain Name System by government bodies as a way of enforcing intellectual property rights and the consequences of that use. Other topics discussed at the day-long conference included the role of the private sector in Internet governance and the future of the DNS system.

Ammori, Panel Talk Coding In America

On March 28, Ammori participated in a panel discussion hosted at New America NYC on why everyone should learn to code.
Other panelists included Codecademy CEO Zach Sims, Etsy Software Engineer Martha Girdler, and Hacker School Co-founder Nicholas Bergson-Shilcock. The panel talked about the importance of coding to both tech jobs and other fields, and how coding education can become more prevalent in and out of the classroom environment.

Politico: It Is Time To Update Online Privacy

On March 21, Ammori and Pelican published an opinion piece in Politico on the economic harms caused by America’s insufficient privacy laws.

The piece addresses how foreign cloud computing companies, competing against their American counterparts, use America’s laws as part of their marketing efforts to attract customers away from American businesses. The way to fix this imbalance is to improve American privacy and cybersecurity laws to better protect consumers.

Ammori discussed his recent Slate article on disruptive technology companies like Uber, SideCar, and Lyft that are dramatically changing transportation markets in American cities, the obstacles those companies face from local governments and the taxi industry, and what the Federal Trade Commission, state governments, and Congress might be able to do to remove those obstacles.

Slate: Can the FTC Save Uber?

On March 12, Ammori published an article on Slate, identifying how city governments are attempting to stifle competition in the taxi market from startups like Uber, SideCar, and Lyft.

Ammori then discussed the chances that the FTC can successfully intervene to ensure competition in those markets, while also identifying the ways in which state governments and Congress may be able to provide a solution if the FTC proved unable to do so.

Brito and Ammori discussed the themes running through Ammori’s book “On Internet Freedom” and his Wisconsin Law Review article entitled First Amendment Architecture, and addressed topics including SOPA / PIPA, network neutrality, and the idea of the First Amendment as a positive speech right. Ammori and Pelican published an article in the Albany Law Review‘s 2012 / 2013 Symposium on “What Are We Saying? Violence, Vulgarity, Lies…And The Importance Of 21st Century Free Speech.”

Their piece, entitled “Media Diversity and Online Advertising,” discusses the intersection between restrictions on online advertising over privacy concerns and media diversity, and the tension between those competing interests. A PDF of the article is available here.
